What to Do When You Get the Short End of the Stick in a Divorce

Divorce in Houston

The process of divorce is one that no one wants to go through. It is emotional, expensive, and life altering. Unfortunately, not all divorces end on an even note. As with any other form of job, some attorneys are better at their jobs than others. Therefore, if your divorce lawyer in Southside Place isn’t as sharp as your partner’s Houston divorce lawyer, you may find yourself getting shafted in the divorce. Although this may be hard to take, it’s important to remember that old saying, “It isn’t over ’till the fat lady sings.”. There are things that you can do to force fair results.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is get a new Southside Place divorce lawyer or surrounding area. If your last lawyer didn’t do very well at making the divorce end evenly, they’re going to have a hard time if you give them second chances. At this point, it’s time to count your losses with that attorney and move on to bigger and better. This time, when searching for your next lawyer, make sure to read consumer reviews of how that attorney has helped other people. Chances are, if other people were happy, you will be too. If others were happy, chances are, you will be happy.

Once you’ve found a lawyer, you’re going to be asked what parts of your divorce were unfair and why. You’re going to want to have answers ready for these questions. For instance, if you feel that you only got 80% of assets that may be unfair. When couple’s divorce, unless there’s some kind of special circumstances, the assets should be split evenly. Therefore, you were shafted out of the other 30% of assets that you deserve.

You might feel as though child support is unfair. Let’s say that you were awarded only $400 per month in child support. We all know that supporting a child costs well over $800 per month. Between school supplies, clothes, extracurricular activities and everything else that comes along with raising a child, it could very well be a several thousand dollar per month expense. However, with only $800 per month, it may be hard to give a child everything needed for development. Because parents should split the cost of raising a child, if you’re not getting your half in child support, that may be unfair. There are all kinds of reasons that you may feel like your divorce went unfairly. And, you could very well be right.

At this point, consult with the attorney that you decide to work with. Your attorney will most likely start by setting your expectations. Although there is no guaranteed outcome in court, they may be able to give you a good idea of what is going to happen. Be honest with your lawyer and follow his or her directions each step of the way. If you do so, what you were hoping to get out of your divorce just make come through other litigation.
