Parenting Coordination in Texas: Helping Parents Collaborate Effectively
For over 25 years, I represented debtors as a consumer bankruptcy attorney, filing over 4,000 Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases. Today, I represent creditors seeking what they are rightfully owed under Texas law. My work continues to focus on resolving disputes, fostering accountability, and navigating complex legal matters—values that align closely with the principles of effective parenting coordination.
The Domestic Relations Office (DRO) now offers Parenting Coordination, a valuable resource for families in conflict, as authorized under Chapter 153, Subchapter K, of the Texas Family Code. This service is provided by trained professionals such as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSWs), and Psychologists who have met the TFC’s training requirements.
What is Parenting Coordination?
Parenting Coordination is a confidential process designed to help parents resolve disputes while minimizing conflict and misunderstanding. The goals include:
- Identifying disputed issues
- Reducing misunderstandings
- Clarifying priorities
- Exploring problem-solving methods
- Developing effective co-parenting strategies
- Creating and implementing parenting plans
- Complying with court orders regarding custody and visitation
- Improving conflict resolution and parenting skills
- Reaching joint resolutions on parenting disputes
How Does It Work?
The Parenting Coordinator will begin with individual sessions to understand each parent’s perspective and the specific issues at hand. Following this, joint sessions will be conducted to work collaboratively toward solutions. Parents will also receive resources, including the highly-regarded Cooperative Parenting – Shielding Your Child From Conflict by Susan Boyan, M.Ed., L.M.F.T., and Ann Termini, M.S., L.P.C.
Parents will work through targeted exercises from the Co-Parenting Guide, focusing on their unique challenges. These activities are designed to enhance communication, foster collaboration, and prioritize the child’s well-being.
Flexible and Affordable
The DRO offers a sliding scale fee based on each party’s gross income, which covers six sessions. Additional sessions can be arranged as needed to ensure progress and resolution.
Why Parenting Coordination Matters
Parenting coordination helps parents shift their focus from conflict to collaboration, creating a healthier environment for their children. It empowers families to navigate disputes constructively, reducing stress and fostering long-term harmony.
